SPARTAN WRESTLING
| General Information 08/2008 |
The Spartans Youth Club is bringing the community their first season of youth wrestling. For ages 5 to 14, the goal of Spartans Wrestling is to develop the athletes’ character and self discipline on and off the mat, as well as their wrestling technique. Athletes of all abilities are welcome. From those with no experience to those with many years, the coaching staff is qualified to meet the needs of the varying abilities of each athlete.
PRACTICE
Practices will be held in the evenings in the wrestling room at Eaglecrest High School. If the school is closed for scheduled break practice will be cancelled. Practices will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00-7:30 PM. The number of participants will determine if extra days or sessions are necessary to accommodate all athletes. The season will begin on Monday, November 3rd.
COMPETITION
Spartans Wrestling will be a part of the South Suburban Wrestling League. This league offers four dual meets and three individual tournaments. Tournaments will be held in December and January. Starting in January, the Wednesday night practice becomes a competition night where Spartans Wrestling competes against the other schools. Wrestlers will be paired as closely as possible by age group and weight. These competitions are suited for all levels of athletes.
For those athletes looking for more competitive tournaments, we will also be attending some of the Western Suburban Wrestling League tournaments around the area. These are held each Sunday, starting in November and ending in February 2009. Wrestlers are placed in a bracket based on their age and weight as of the time of tournament weigh-in. These competitions are most suited for the Intermediate and Advanced wrestler. Some WSWL tournaments offer Novice brackets.
Every wrestler will compete in the South Suburban Wrestling League and will be encouraged to participate in at least one Western Suburban Wrestling League competition.
PARENTS
There will be a mandatory parent meeting on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at the Eaglecrest wrestling room during the practice sessions to learn more about the club and what to expect for the coming season. The sport of wrestling requires parental involvement and positive support for the development of the child’s self-confidence and technique. Parents are encouraged to attend practices and actively participate in all aspects to help the program be successful.
UNIFORMS
We will have a uniform package to be purchased individually for $50. This will include a black singlet, t-shirt, and shorts, all with the Spartans logo on them. We will host a company that will be selling headgear and shoes at our first practice. You may choose to purchase your gear through this opportunity or somewhere else of your choice.
